The displacement of thousands of people by the ongoing conflict between government forces and ethnic rebels in Kachin State has significantly increased the risks to young people, warns the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef). In a statement issued on Tuesday, the UN agency said that an estimated 1,000 children were among those forced to leave their homes amid recent fighting between Burmese troops and the Kachin Independence Army. The risks to children include health problems associated with the lack of access to safe drinking water and basic services, the danger of landmines, and the increased likelihood of young boys being recruited as child soldiers.
