A fire broke out at a market in Thabyuzayat Township, Mon State, on Saturday, destroying around 500 shops and an estimated 20 billion kyat (US $23 million) worth of merchandise, according to local sources. The blaze started at around 10:30 pm and firefighters did not arrive on the scene until more than an hour later, despite the fact that the market is in the center of town and just 15 minutes drive from the nearest fire station. The cause of the fire was unknown. Last year a market in Moulmein was destroyed under similar circumstances and was quickly rebuilt by developers.
