The Union Election Commission chairman says the Burma military’s currently guaranteed 25 percent of seats in Parliament must “one day” be reduced to nil, The Myanma Freedom Daily reports. “They [military MPs] have to leave as democracy becomes mature,” Tin Aye was quoted as saying. The chairman reportedly made the remarks on the sidelines of an event in Rangoon on Saturday in which President Thein Sein met with more than 60 of Burma’s political parties. Tin Aye also cautioned against “hastily” amending the 2008 Constitution, which enshrines a role in politics for the nation’s military.
