Rev. Mai Ki, an ethnic Chin woman, has been named one of this year’s winners of the Women’s Creativity in Rural Life prize, awarded by the Switzerland-based Women’s World Summit Foundation. Despite growing up in an illiterate farming family, Mai Ki was able to earn a master’s degree in theology from a university in India, and later returned to Burma to take on a leading role in her community. The award is given each year on the International Day of Rural Women (Oct. 15) to honor women around the world for their contributions to improving the quality of life in rural communities. Last year, Mai Ki was named an Inspired Individual by the anti-poverty Christian NGO Tearfund.
