Japan hopes that Burma will quickly move towards democracy and national reconciliation, Foreign Minister Koichiro Genba said on Tuesday. He added that hastened reform is the best way to help the people of the military-dominated Southeast Asian nation become economically affluent. “What is important from now on is that . . . people in Myanmar realize that their country will become rich if the democratic process and national reconciliation advance,” Genba told reporters when asked about the victory of pro-democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party in Sunday’s parliamentary by-elections.
