Burma’s army has begun building a “temporary” base camp in an area claimed by India along the two countries’ shared border, according to a report by the Imphal Free Press, an English-language daily published in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur. The camp is located near the village of Holenphai, just south of the border town of Moreh and about 10 meters from border pillar number 76, the location of which is currently a subject of dispute. Indian army officers inspected the site and urged their Burmese counterparts to stop construction, but the Burmese commanding officer said work on the camp could not be stopped without orders from above.
