Burma’s navy has commissioned a new guided-missile frigate as part of an ongoing expansion aimed at developing a blue-water capability to protect the country’s exclusive economic zone and offshore energy interests, reports IHS Jane’s Defense Weekly. The UMS Kyansitthar was commissioned at Thanlyin naval station near Rangoon on March 31, just two days after the launch of the UMS Sin Phyu Shin, the navy’s third frigate. The commissioning ceremony was presided over by Snr-Gen Soe Win, the army commander and deputy commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and Adm Thura Thet Swe, the commander-in-chief of the Burmese navy, according to official media reports.
