Burma Minister’s ‘Slapping’ Rant Draws Protest in Rangoon

4 February 2014

About 30 activists demonstrated at Rangoon’s City Hall on Monday inviting a government minister to “slap” them, the Myanma Freedom Daily reported, following controversial comments by the official last week. Rural Development Minister Ohn Myint was caught on video telling villagers in Magwe Division that he had “slapped many people’s cheeks.” In the video, posted online, Ohn Myint said, “If someone insults the government or opposes the government, I will send them to prison.” “We are just lining up to be slapped by the minister,” the Freedom Daily quoted one of the demonstrators, political activist Ba Myint of Democracy Forces, as saying on Saturday.
