Burma is drafting a national building code, DVB reports. Than Myint, chairman of the Committee for Quality Control of High-rise Building Projects, said the code will be designed to ensure construction safety standards and combat embezzlement. The former capital Rangoon has been experiencing a real estate boom that has seen property prices skyrocket, while numerous high-rise buildings are being constructed. “Despite continuing construction,” Than Myint said, “we have yet to enforce any regulation.” He added, “There may also be some buildings constructed in the past that need reviewing. It is important to set a schedule for check-up systems on these buildings.”
