Authorities Expand Fencing Around Letpadaung Mine

Authorities in Monywa Township, Sagaing Division, have expanded the fencing around the controversial Letpadaung Copper Mine, closing off another 300 acres of land that was farmed by 50 villagers, Democratic Voice of Burma reports. “In total 11.54 acres of my farmland was fenced up and now I have lost all hope,” said Yi Yi Win from Sete village. In recent years, hundreds of villagers have lost land to the project, which is a joint venture between China’s Wanbao mining firm and the military-owned Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd. Many continue to fiercely resist the project and have rejected compensation offers.
