Over 300 shops at a market in Rangoon’s Sanchaung Township were destroyed by fire early Friday morning. Witnesses said the fire started at around 1:30 am and lasted about one hour. Some of the affected shop owners said that they had resisted recent plans by the municipal authorities to tear down the market and replace it with a new one, prompting some to suspect that the fire was no accident. “There was heavy rain in Rangoon yesterday, so how could a fire start so easily?” said one shopkeeper. However, an officer from the local fire department said the fire was likely caused by carelessness.
