Anonymous, a loosely associated group of activist hackers, shut down several websites run by Burma’s government on Monday in a show of support for Muslims targeted by recent violence in the country, according to a report by Australia’s public broadcaster SBS. The group, which in the past has carried out distributed denial-of-service attacks (DDOS) attacks on government sites in Syria, Libya, Tunisia and Egypt, also propelled the Twitter hashtag #RohingyaNOW to the number one trend on Monday. The disabled Burmese government websites have since been restored to full operation.
