The US Embassy on Monday strongly advised US citizens to avoid Mingalar Market/Yuzana Plaza, a Muslim neighborhood in central Rangoon located east of Kandawgyi Lake. The warning comes after days of anti-Muslim riots in central Burma and subsequent reports of potential unrest in Rangoon. The embassy said there are no specific threats to Americans but recommends that its citizens refrain from visiting the area as “communal violence in Mandalay region over the last week has resulted in strong feelings on many sides.” It added, “A fight broke out in [Mingalar Market] area [on Monday] as a result of ongoing tensions, resulting in a heavy police presence. Many shops have closed.”
