Phyo Wai Aung, who was sentenced to death in May for allegedly bombing the Thingyan water festival in Rangoon in 2010, was pardoned on Friday, his brother told The Irrawaddy. Phyo Wai Aung has been hospitalized at Rangoon’s Insein General Hospital for liver cancer and paralysis of his lower body since May. UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights for Burma Tomas Ojea Quintana met with him on July 30 during his visit to the country. Dr Htet Wai Aung, Phyo Wai Aung’s brother, said the family will arrange to move him to another hospital.
