A Japanese freelance journalist was detained by security forces in Myanmar’s largest city Yangon on Friday while covering an anti-coup protest there, his assistant said.
Yuki Kitazumi is a former reporter for the Tokyo-based Nikkei business daily and is now based in Yangon. The Japanese Embassy in Yangon was trying to ascertain his identity, an embassy official said.
Local media reported that about 20 people were detained during Friday’s demonstration in central Yangon, including protesters.
