At least 37 civilians have been killed and 65 injured since Operation 1027 began on October 27 in northern Shan State, according to the Ta’ang Women’s Organization (TWO) that monitors civilian casualties.
Most civilian casualties have been caused by junta shelling and airstrikes while more than 100 civilian building, including religious structures, have been destroyed, the group said.
“Children, pregnant women and senior citizens were among those killed, mostly by heavy explosives and airstrikes targeting civilian areas,” said TWO.
On Sunday night, the regime’s Sakham Thit base shelled Namkham town, which recently fell to the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), burning down a community hall, according to the TWO.
On Saturday afternoon the regional military command shelled a crowd trapped at a toll gate in Laukkai town amid fighting with the Brotherhood Alliance, killing six people and injuring others, according to media reports.
Three people, including a 12-year-old, were killed in Lashio Township, northern Shan State, last Thursday when junta forces shelled Min Tin village, where many displaced people were sheltering in the monastery, said the TWO.
On Sunday, junta forces carried out an estimated 170 shelling attacks and eight airstrikes across eight northern Shan State townships, said the TNLA.
