RANGOON— Former junta leader Snr-Gen Than Shwe met with Aung San Suu Kyi on Friday afternoon, according to sources in the country’s capital.
A source close to the matter told The Irrawaddy that the meeting was brokered by Union Parliament Speaker Shwe Mann who was ousted from his post as ruling party chair in August. The source said “the meeting went well.”
Shwe Mann, an active presence on social media, posted on his Facebook page on Friday that, “Now is the time to look out for national and Union interests, rather than those of a group of people or a party.”
Friday’s meeting between Than Shwe and Suu Kyi took place two days after the National League for Democracy (NLD) leader met separately with Burma’s president and commander-in-chief in Naypyidaw. All parties pledged to collaborate toward a smooth transition of power.
The NLD won a resounding victory at the polls on Nov. 8, with a sufficient parliamentary majority to select the country’s next president.
Suu Kyi also met with Than Shwe’s grandson Nay Shwe Thway Aung in the capital last month, though the content of that discussion has not been revealed.
The NLD has not yet confirmed or denied Friday’s meeting between Suu Kyi and Than Shwe, which reportedly took place at the army’s Naypyidaw headquarters.
