Burma’s President Thein Sein has agreed to take a pay cut from the 5 million kyats (US$5,000) that he currently earns per month, DVB reports. Speaking before Parliament this week, Deputy Finance Minister Maung Maung Thein suggested that the president’s salary be reduced to 3-4 million kyats, in line with what general managers of companies in Burma typically earn. Thein Sein, who is more than two-and-a-half years into his five-year term, has reportedly been withdrawing an average of just 1.5 million kyats per month since he took office. The issue came up in the course of a proposal to amend Burma’s Law on Salaries, Allowances and Insignias of Union-Level Persons.
