South Korean Yanghee Lee, a former child psychologist, has been confirmed as United Nations Special Rapporteur to Burma per June 1, taking over from former rapporteur Tomas Ojea Quintana, DVB reports. For some time, Lee had been considered a frontrunner for the position ahead of several candidates, including former Suu Kyi lawyer Jared Genser and British activist-academic Guy Horton. She has little experience in Burma. Lee was on the UN’s Committee on the Rights of the Child in 2003 and later became chairperson. DVB reports she has a background in child psychology and education, and a BSc graduate of Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
