Nationalist Buddhist monk Wirathu has criticized plans for an anti-hate speech congress organized by Muslims, the Myanmar Times reports. Muslims leaders hope to hold a Union Muslim Congress before September, with the attendance of Muslims from several ethnic groups, including those not officially recognized by the government, the times reported Thursday. Wirathu told the newspaper he believed it was important to oppose hate speech, but that he disagreed with the name of the congress. “They are wrong to use the word ‘union,’ as the event can then only be attended by Kaman [Muslims],” he was quoted as saying, referring to an ethnic group officially recognized by the government.
