For the first time, two female officers have been chosen to serve in Burma’s Parliament as military appointees. In an announcement published in the state-run newspaper The New Light of Myanmar on Friday, Lt-Col Daw Soe Soe Myint and Lt-Col Daw San Thida Khin were named among four new appointees brought in to replace outgoing military members of the Pyitthu Hluttaw, or Lower House of Parliament. The announcement was issued by the Union Election Commission. Under Burma’s military-drafted 2008 Constitution, 25 percent of seats in both houses of Parliament and state and regional legislatures are reserved for active members of the armed forces.
