Today marks 29 years since the end of the 1988 Uprising and the beginning of rule by the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC), which seized power in a military coup on September 18. During the uprising, thousands of people were reportedly killed by the military in their struggle to achieve democracy for Myanmar.
