RANGOON — Eschewing traditional materials for canvases, Pyin Oo Lwin artist Muu Muu opts for mulberry pulp, a traditionally produced paper common in Burma. He says he discovered its merits as an artistic medium by accident.
“It’s something people have ignored. It’s traditional. Plus, it’s cheap,” the 60-year old painter told The Irrawaddy, days before his upcoming art show.
‘Whimsical World: A Tale from a Hill Station’ will be open to the public from this weekend at the Pyin Oo Lwin Town Hall. Featuring more than 50 paintings rendered from ink and acrylic, Muu Muu’s sixth solo exhibition evokes a sense of daily life in the hill town.
“Most of the paintings in the show are just about the town I’m living in,” he said. “Some are outdoor scenes, while others are on subjects seen in everyday life.”
Fifteen percent of the proceeds from the sale of Muu Muu’s artworks will be donated to a local orphanage.
