A Myanmar resistance group claims it used an improvised drone to bomb a junta airbase in the regime’s administrative capital of Naypyitaw last Friday.

The Iron Tiger Battalion of Northern Thandaung Defense Force (NTDF) and allied drone unit Lethal Prop deployed a makeshift remote-controlled winged drone to drop two improvised bombs targeting the aircraft hangers at the Aye Lar military base next to Naypyitaw International Airport at 3 pm on Sept. 15, said NTDF.

Aerial video released by the resistance group shows the remote-controlled aircraft dropping bombs while hovering over the junta base.

Details of damage and/or casualties caused by the strike are unknown.

Myanmar netizens have praised the group’s ability to evade jamming equipment at the airbase and successfully conduct a drone strike.

The resistance groups reportedly bombarded the same airbase with rockets in mid-April.

Resistance groups including People’s Defense Forces (PDFs), the armed wing of the civilian National Unity Government (NUG), and the armed wing of the powerful Karen National Union (KNU), have stepped up anti-regime attacks near the capital Naypyitaw, directly threatening the junta’s nerve center.

The second week of August saw clashes break out in Pyinmana Township, about 40 kilometers east of downtown Naypyitaw, when Iron Tiger Battalion and an allied group raided and occupied a strategic military outpost in mountainous terrain.

The resistance groups also ambushed junta troops sent as reinforcements.

The clashes killed an estimated 50 regime troops and three resistance fighters, while the junta responded by conducting airstrikes.
