A Myanmar urban resistance group claims to have killed five regime personnel during an attack in Ye Township, Mon State on Tuesday.
Resistance group Ye Belu (Ye Ogre Force) said it ambushed regime forces guarding the junta-owned Myawaddy Bank in Ye town center.
In a video statement, the group’s leader said that three regime soldiers were killed in their bunkers outside the bank. Another two soldiers were gunned down on a higher floor inside the building, he added.
“We carefully planned the mission to attack at a time when no civilians were around, to avoid harming people,” the resistance leader said.
The group said it was unable to seize weapons from the dead soldiers, however.
CCTV footage shows two gunmen firing automatic rifles in front of the building.
Pro-junta media posted photos of two victims and claimed that the attack killed one regime soldier and left one civilian seriously injured.
The Irrawaddy was unable to independently verify the reports.
On Sept. 18, the same urban guerrilla group shot dead a senior police Special Branch officer, Captain Myint Lwin, as he was driving through Ye town.
The group said it conducted the assassination after receiving reports from civilians that the officer was extorting money from locals.
Widely circulated video clips of its daring and successful attacks on junta troops and officials have made Ye Belu a well-known and popular resistance group among Myanmar citizens.
People both at home and abroad are donating money to Ye Belu and other resistance groups to fund more anti-regime operations.
