An albino elephant, regarded in Burma as an auspicious animal, accidentally gored his handler to death, reports the DPA news agency. The 19-year-old tusker was reportedly moving his massive head up and down when he caught the mahout, or elephant handler, in the chest. The mahout, named Thein Sein, died en route to hospital after the incident at Royal White Elephant Garden on the outskirts of Rangoon, said a garden official. The elephant was the first of eight captured by Burma’s former military regime. In Southeast Asia, the capture of a white elephant is deemed a sign of the worthiness of the ruling kingdom or government.
