UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has welcomed the Burmese government’s announcement of a unilateral ceasefire in its fight with Kachin armed rebels in northern Burma. A statement said that the secretary general “has been following the various reports from the ground on its implementation.” Since the announcement, fighting has continued in Kachin State and government forces tried to take at least one rebel-held mountaintop outpost over the weekend. The statement said Ban Ki-Moon “calls upon both sides to make serious effort to create conditions for sustained peace in Kachin through enhanced confidence building measures and political dialogue,” He added that the government should also let the UN access displaced Kachin villagers.
