UK-based freedom of expression advocacy group Article 19 has welcomed the recent amendment of the Peaceful Assembly Law. This removed the need for people to apply to the police for permission to protest—a requirement under the law’s section 18. “The amendment of this anti-democratic law is the first successful step of an increasingly influential civil society working together with new MPs that are striving to democratize [Burma],” Article 19 Director David Diaz-Jogeix said in a press release. MP Aung Zin, who was instrumental in achieving the amendment, said, “change to section 18 will spread beyond the parliament out to the people.”
