Burma’s Political Prisoners Scrutinizing Committee is urging President Thein Sein to drop charges against 200 political activists awaiting or standing trial, Mizzima reported Monday. A spokesman for the government-formed committee said the proposal was being discussed with the attorney general and the chief justice, but Kyee Myint, chairman of the Interim Myanmar Lawyers’ Network, told Mizzima that the National Defense and Security Council would be required to drop charges for the cases. Thein Sein has pledged to release all remaining political prisoners from the country’s jails by year’s end. Eighty-two people behind bars are still classified as political prisoners by the committee.
