Burmese President Thein Sein has called for more cooperation between Southeast Asian countries on dealing with natural disasters, state media reports. The New Light of Myanmar on Monday said that during a speech to open the Asean Summit in Naypyidaw on Sunday, Thein Sein said due to climate change, extreme weather has affected the region with “increased frequencies and ferocity.” “[I]n order to deal with the issue an ASEAN Rapid Response capacity should be established, including a pool of rescue and relief experts and equipment in each member country that can be deployed quickly in the event of disasters,” the president reportedly said.
