Well-known blogger and former political prisoner Nay Phone Latt has launched a campaign against the use of hate speech on social media, reports DVB. Dubbed Panzagar (“flower speech”), the campaign got underway on Friday, when activists began distributing pamphlets featuring a logo of lips clasping a flower branch and the slogan, “Let’s moderate our speech to prevent hatred among human beings.” Only around 700,000 Burmese citizens regularly use the Internet, according to government figures, but Facebook and other social media are rapidly gaining popularity, and are increasingly being used as platforms for attacking minority groups at a time when communal tensions are high in the country.
