Lower House Speaker Shwe Mann led a delegation of MPs to strife-torn Arakan State over the weekend. The group visited the state capital Sittwe and Maungdaw and Rathedaung townships, which were the scene of communal violence between ethnic Arakanese Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims in June. They visited Buddhist monasteries housing some of the thousands of people displaced by the violence and donated 12,930,000 kyat (nearly $15,000) for their support. State media reported that the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party also donated 20 million kyat ($23,000).
