Group Calls for Probe of Migrant Deaths
23 April 2012
A migrant rights group has called on Thailand to investigate the deaths of two Burmese workers found dead last week in the back of a deportation vehicle en route to the Thai-Burmese border town of Mae Sot. In a press release, the Mekong Migration Network said that Maung Soe, 25, and Ma Mi Lar, 36, were among 62 Burmese being transported from Thailand’s Songkhla Province to the border for deportation. Although initial media reports suggested the two died because of overcrowding on the truck being used to transport them, the group said this could not be confirmed.
