The Former Political Prisoners Group plans to create a nationwide network to support the welfare of political prisoners, Radio Free Asia reported Tuesday. The Rangoon-based nonprofit wants to create and link groups across the country to campaign on behalf of prisoners remaining behind bars and those who have already been released, the news agency reported. The proposed network comes amid concerns that, despite President Thein Sein’s promises to release all political prisoners by the year’s end, activists in the country continue to be arrested for their political beliefs and activities.
