The severe flooding that affected large parts of southern Burma in recent weeks has destroyed about 50,000 acres (20,000 hectares) of paddy field in Pyapon Township in the Irrawaddy Delta, while another 20,000 acres (8,000 hectares) in the area have been affected, Democratic Voice of Burma reports. Myanmar Farmers Association Chairman Dr Soe Tun said that another 5,000 acres (2,000 hectares) of paddy field were lost due to flooding in Karen State and about 1,000 acres (250 hectares) were destroyed in Mon State. “We need to be very careful with these weather conditions,” Soe Tun was quoted as saying.
