Heavy fighting was reported between Burmese troops and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and an allied ethnic army in northern Shan State on Wednesday morning, according to sources in the area. The clash took place about 11 km northeast of Namhsan Township, and lasted about two and a half hours, from 5 am to 7:30 am. A source from the Taaung National Liberation Army, a KIA ally, said that there were also skirmishes yesterday and two exchanges of fire at different locations around Namhsan on Oct. 1. No casualties were reported in the fighting on Wednesday.
