Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi urged Burma on Wednesday to ensure that major Chinese-backed development projects in the country proceed smoothly, according to a report by China’s state-run news agency Xinhua. Yang told his visiting Burmese counterpart, Wunna Maung Lwin, that China is ready to work with Burma to strengthen communication and coordination based on the principle of mutual respect and reciprocity. Last year, relations between the two countries suffered a setback when Burma’s president suddenly announced the suspension of a massive Chinese-financed hydro-power project.
