China Bans Burmese Beef Imports
25 July 2012
China stopped importing beef products from Burma in mid-July after detecting foot and mouth disease, claims Mizzima. The Chinese government informed Burma that its beef exports are now prohibited under the Animals, Floral, Fruits and Diseases Control Law, Win Sein, vice-chairman of the Myanmar Livestock Federation, was quoted by the Burmese media group. The disease is endemic across Burma—especially in Magway, Irrawaddy and Rangoon regions—and several outbreaks have caused substantial economic losses in the sector. Burma has an estimated 17 million cows and buffaloes.
