Burma’s women’s football team has ended its bid for gold after losing 9-8 in a penalty shootout with Thailand on Wednesday. The Burmese team’s first goal was disqualified after being declared off-side, provoking anger among home-team fans. Ninety minutes into the game, Burma’s Margaret Mary equalized the score at 1-1, earning the team an extra 30 minutes to beat their opponents. Five minutes later, Thailand scored its second goal, but was soon tied again, forcing the two teams to decide the winner through a penalty shootout. The Burmese team’s failure to make the ninth shot delivered the victory to Thailand, which will play Vietnam for the gold, while Burma will compete with Malaysia for the bronze on Friday in Mandalay.
