Bangladesh to Carry Out Count of Illegal Rohingya Migrants
10 September 2013
Bangladesh will undertake a headcount of the number of illegal Rohingya Muslim refugees from Burma that are residing within its borders, Bangladesh News 24 Hours reports. A steady trickle of illegal migrants from Burma have made their way to neighboring Bangladesh since military campaigns targeting the minority group were carried out by the Burma government in the late 1970s and early ’80s. “Their long-term stay in Bangladesh resulted in socio-economic, political, environmental and security crises,” the Bangladesh government’s cabinet secretary was quoted as saying on Monday. Bangladesh estimates that more than 500,000 Rohingyas are in the country illegally.
