Australia to Lift Sanctions on Burma
8 June 2012
Australia will lift all remaining sanctions against Burma and more than double its foreign aid to the country, Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr said on Thursday after talks in Naypyidaw. “This is a time of great opportunity for the people of Myanmar, and countries like Australia should be doing what we can to add momentum to the process of democratization,” Carr said in a statement. In addition to lifting travel and financial bans on 130 individuals not covered by an earlier relaxation of sanctions, Australia will increase its aid to Burma to Aus $100 million per year by 2015.
