UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay warned on Wednesday that discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities is undermining Burma’s democratic reform process. She urged the government to end discrimination, particularly against Muslim groups, and stop the impunity for rights violations committed against these groups. “The ongoing human rights violations against the Rohingya community in [Arakan] State, and the spread of anti-Muslim sentiment across the state and beyond, is threatening the reform process and requires focused attention from the government,” she said. “I believe that the political will is there, but encourage the government to translate this will into concrete actions.”
