A group of 133 Burma-focused civil society organizations based in Burma, Thailand and various other countries sent an open letter to US President Barack Obama, UK Prime Minister David Cameron and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Thursday, urging them to look more critically at their governments’ plans to engage with the Burmese military. The initiative, led by the Burma Partnership, calls for setting “explicit preconditions that must be met prior to any military engagement and states the criteria for military engagement.” These preconditions include that the military withdraws from all conflict zones, acknowledges past human rights abuses and allows for independent investigation of abuses.
