About 15 regime soldiers, including a major, were killed by the Pekon People Defense Force (PDF) and Karenni Nationalities Defense Force on Thursday in Nyaung Shwe Township, southern Shan State.

Regime forces from 18 Light Infantry Battalion from 55 Division and allies from the Pa-O National Organization (PNO), an ethnic armed group, were based at a school in Hti Yi village, according to Pekon PDF.

After 90 minutes of fighting, the regime position was seized, 15 soldiers were killed and five were seized, three of whom were PNO members.

A villager said: “I heard artillery and shooting in the early morning, followed by two junta airstrikes.”

Two Pekon PDF fighters were injured and one is in a critical condition.

Photos and video show the five captured soldiers and seized rifles, artillery and bombs and the corpses of regime soldiers.

Kayah State is a fiercely contested resistance stronghold because of its proximity to the capital, Naypyitaw.

Repeated fighting and artillery strikes are reported across the state and over 200,000 residents have fled their homes.
