Three days of junta air and artillery strikes on Nyaung Lay Pin district, Bago Region have killed one child and an elderly resident, wounded 13, and forced around 3,700 civilians to flee, said the Karen National Union (KNU).
On Sunday, four junta fighter jets attacked Moen Township’s Haw Kho Waw village in KNU Brigade-3 territory after fierce fighting between regime troops and the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA). The two-hour clash saw the regime’s Light Infantry Battalion 439 and Infantry Battalion 60 pound the area around Haw Kho Waw village pagoda and Wae Kaw village with 63 shells, according to the KNU.
The bombardment killed 12-year-old Saw Lar Khu War and injured six other villagers, while forcing residents of five villages to flee.
On Monday, Infantry Battalion 60 shelled Pa Ye Si village in Moen Township, killing an 83-year-old villager and wounding three others.
Another four residents including a 6-month-old baby in Wyne Kyoe village, Shwe Kyin Township, were wounded by regime shelling on the same day, the KNU said.
On Tuesday, junta forces launched an airstrike near Law Mu Taw village in Kyaukkyi Township, Nyaung Lay Pin district, destroying a house and a monastery, and displacing around 700 civilians.
The KNU said residents who fled the attacks are seeking shelter in the forest amid heavy monsoon rain and are in urgent need of food and medical supplies.
Fighting between Myanmar junta troops and the KNLA in Kyaukkyi and Moen townships started in July, since when thousands of residents have fled their homes. The military is frequently targeting civilian populations of the two townships with artillery and airstrikes, KNU said.
