RANGOON — Authorities have arrested at least 15 people allegedly involved in planning armed attacks in northern Arakan State’s Maungdaw Township, according to a State Counselor’s Office statement on Thursday.
Of those arrested, seven were among 36 people alleged to have attended armed attack training on March 1, according to authorities.
Trainees reportedly planned to attack border guard posts in their villages after acquiring weapons from a “neighboring country.”
At least 15 people were arrested in recent security operations, according to the statement, including one man who was charged under the import/export law for illegal use of a SIM card.
Two of those arrested reportedly admitted to donating 100,000 kyats (US$70) each to the training. Attendees of the March 1 lecture were paid 3,000 kyats for the day.
