Two leading US lawmakers have called on the Obama administration to use its leverage in international financial institutions to press for greater fiscal transparency in Burma, according to a report by Foreign Policy. Democratic congressman Barney Frank, the chairman of the House Committee on Financial Services, and Spencer Bachus, the committee’s ranking Republican, wrote a letter on Aug. 22 to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to ensure that Burmese reforms conform to international financial management standards. They expressed particular concern about the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise.
