Four police officers were detained by authorities over the weekend in Arakan State after they were caught with large amounts of methamphetamine pills, known locally as yaba, which they had confiscated from a Buddhist monk. The Maungdaw Township court found the Maungdaw police chief and three other officers had seized about 120,000 pills from the monk, but not all of them made their way to the evidence room. Half the pills disappeared. The seized drugs had an estimated total street value of 3 billion kyat (US $4 million). Maungdaw is a key transport route for drugs from Burma to Bangladesh.
