Mon State, in southern Myanmar, is reeling from deadly, torrential rains that hit the whole region last week. In Mottama, in Paung Township, nearly 60 people were killed in a landslide and in Ye Township, in the state’s deep south, thousands were affected by the area’s worst flood in 30 years. Despite receding water levels in some parts of the townhsip as of Monday, Ye residents are still coping with the aftermath, wading through mudflows left by the floods. More than 1,400 of the 1,600 homes in the township’s Hangan Village were inundated with floods, causing serious damage to homes and household goods. The heavy rain took its toll on the region’s infrastructure as well, with a bridge connecting Thanphyu Zayat and Ye townships collapsing. Local authorities worked urgently to restore temporary use of the bridge so as not to interrupt ongoing relief efforts in the region.
