RANGOON — In his first visit to the country since the National League for Democracy’s landslide win in Burma’s Nov. 8 general election, NLD spokesman Nyan Win will travel to Japan on Nov. 26 to meet with Burmese communities there.

Nyan Win, who is also an NLD central executive committee member, told The Irrawaddy on Monday that he was invited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and that he will be there for one week.

“I already have a good relationship with the foreign affairs ministry there. That’s why they have invited me,” he said. “There are no specific plans, but I’ll meet with Burmese communities in Japan, as well as participate in a tour of Kyoto.”

According to members of the National League for Democracy-Liberated Areas (NLD-LA) branch in Japan, Nyan Win will discuss the election results, which saw the NLD win around 80 percent of elected parliamentary seats, and what this might mean for Burma’s political situation.

Nyan Win added, however, that his trip is not related to the Japanese government’s invitation to Aung San Suu Kyi last week. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe invited the NLD chairwoman to visit Japan at an early date and also extended his congratulations to her for her party’s victory in Burma’s historic election.
